Diet plan. Planning diet with switching to healthy organic food

The proliferation of organic food and the appearance of the organic seal together with the marketing associated with it, makes consumers perceive these foods as superior, both in nutrients and in respect for the environment. But can we ensure both statements when we see an organic product? We tell you in this video and in the article.

What is a portion of organic food?

A product that has the ecological seal is one that has followed certain rules of agricultural production and management, which take into account the care of the environment, the
preservation of natural resources and animal welfare. In addition, the specific rule that no chemical product has been used and that only naturally occurring substances have been used for its cultivation.

Thus, in theory, by consuming organic products we are on the one hand feeding ourselves with high safety and food quality criteria and, on the other hand, we have a positive impact on nature.

This, which in theory is perfect, if we read the rule completely, we will see that there are certain exceptions in which certain chemicals that are of natural origin are authorized: we are talking for example of copper, kaolin (silicate of aluminum), spinosad or potash, which we can find in nature but at certain amounts are also toxic.

On the other hand, that a chemical does not exist naturally in nature (there are no biscuits or yogurt), does not mean that it is harmful to our health. A natural and elaborated product is made up of atoms and what enables its use for human consumption is its validation by the corresponding organisms.

Is it an ecological product of fair or sustainable trade?

We often relate organic products with which they will always be proximity products and it is not a necessary characteristic of organic products. In fact, we could buy an organic Brazil banana or quinoa from Peru but not proximity.

For this same reason, it also does not have to be a seasonal product and be at the optimum point of maturation. By being allowed to ripen on camera, we could buy an organic product that is from another part of the world.

Therefore, organic products may or may not be local and seasonal products, just like conventional products.

Are organic products nutritionally better?

Another argument that is used in the communication of these products is that they have many more vitamins and minerals. The argument they make is the following: «Today, agriculture makes very intensive use of the land and it no longer has nutrients so that the vegetables we consume, have hardly any vitamins».

But what do scientific studies say on this subject? Here you will find a lot of
controversies because there are studies both ways. But if we analyze the meta-analyzes, the studies that have more scientific evidence, the conclusion is that they are practically the same. That is, the number of nutrients in one type of product or another is
practically the same.

It seems that in some organic product there could be a little more antioxidants. But the existence of a greater amount of a nutrient, within a balanced and varied diet (preferably for vegetables and fruits), does not contribute anything special either in our diet or in our health.

Fewer pesticides in organic products

Yes, it has been observed that organic products have fewer pesticide residues, which is normal because they do not use them. However, the current use of pesticides in conventional agriculture does not present any risk to our health, either in the short or long term.

So what is our recommendation?

DON’T GO CRAZY WITH ORGANIC PRODUCTS

What is important is to choose good raw material, which is of proximity, seek to be seasonal, fresh, which I so cocinéis you, that here there are some notable differences both in taste and nutritional value of food.

The important thing as we have said before is to follow a balanced, varied and
sufficient diet, rich in vegetables, rich in fruits, legumes, whole grains and cooked with healthy cooking.

COOKING MORE AND BUYING LESS PROCESSED PRODUCTS IS THE BASIS OF HEALTHY EATING.
